General surgery covers the most common abdominal and wall procedures: inguinal and umbilical hernias, appendicitis, gallbladder disease, obstructions, abscesses and deep wounds.
These conditions are frequent, often urgent, and their outcome depends on delay. A neglected appendicitis, or a strangulated hernia waiting on a transfer to the south of the country, becomes major surgery. Having an operating theater available in Ngaoundéré changes the prognosis as much as the technique used.
The department will share the three-theater block with orthopedics and urology, and will draw on the hospital's laboratory and imaging for pre-operative assessment, with no test to be arranged elsewhere.
