Orthopedics and trauma will be the Sahel International Hospital's first department. It will handle fractures, dislocations, road and workplace trauma, and degenerative joint disease — hip and knee osteoarthritis, cruciate ligament injuries, shoulder conditions.
Cameroon is short of qualified orthopedic surgeons, and the north more than the rest of the country. A road accident on the Ngaoundéré-Garoua highway today means evacuation to Yaoundé or Douala, several hundred kilometers away, when the surgical window is measured in hours. SIH is built so that this surgery happens locally.
The department will have a three-theater operating block and an arthroscopy tower, allowing knee and shoulder surgery through small incisions: less pain, a shorter stay, a faster return to walking. Rehabilitation will be provided on site by the physiotherapy department.
Theaters for both scheduled surgery and emergencies.
Minimally invasive knee and shoulder surgery.
Immediate bone imaging and post-operative checks on site.
